Record Breaker LoZac crowned IRL F2 Champion in Austria

The first IRL F1 2019 Season 9 champion has been crowned as Swiss driver LoZac97 claimed victory in Austria and with it the IRL F2 drivers Championship. The Racing Point driver was unchallenged as he converted Pole Position to victory in what was a record breaking 7th win of the season. LoZac becomes the 23rd IRL Driver Champion and looks ever likely to be racing in the top tier of IRL for Season 10.

News broke in the lead up to the race that team-mate and title contender Tb230791 was handed both a DSQ for the previous race in Singapore, plus a race ban in Austria. This meant a fifth place would be enough to secure the title. His third pole position of the season put him in prime position, and after a tricky start, it was the Red Bull of Eesti Mats leading heading towards turn 3. But the Swiss driver re-took the lead a handful of laps later, and after playing safe with the soft to hard one stop strategy, and not a safety car in sight he crossed the line 5.7 seconds ahead of second place Delange93 to head into the Invictus record books.

“The hards (tyres) at the end were a bit dead, but it was very nice to get the strategy right. I was a bit scared because all of the other guys are going with the mediums, and then I kept asking myself if the hards were a good choice, but I guess in the end yes”
“I had gone off very wide a few times at turn one, in fact I got some penalties, but it felt very good, no big errors, no big mistakes..maybe with a little more practice I could go a little faster”
“It has been a great season for me, some downs in the races, but yeah I think that next season (in IRL F1), I had to practice a bit more with no ABS, but I think I can race with the guys of the F1 league. It will be very fun..”

The season started out in incredible form, with a comprehensive victory in the opening race in Hungary beating the two Alfa’s, and wins in Germany & Britain, but the season looked anything but a formality with McLaren’s FerociousDan leading the fightback running LoZac close in both Germany & Britain. With LoZac missing in Russia, it gave the field chance to close up and team-mate Tb230791 took victory backing up podiums in the previous two. The Swiss driver returned with victory in USA, and although mechanical issues meant a poor result in Azerbaijan, another win in Bahrain against the odds where either of the Renault drivers should have taken the win meant the title was already looking likely. A rare blip in Italy handed the driver a DSQ due to track extensions, but victory in Singapore racked up his 6th win of the season and the maths were simple heading to Austria.

With a record breaking 7 wins this season how does it feel to be in the record books?

“It feels great, because in some races it was very close between 1st to second to third, in Germany with Aaron & Tb, and also in Bahrain, to claim those two victories in those two races was really good because I wanted this record, and I kept thinking about it from 5 wins, 6 wins and today the seventh..I hope more come!”

Congratulations from everyone at Invictus Racing League to LoZac97 on an incredible record breaking season and we look forward to his arrival in the top tier of IRL
